Detour Farm

Welcome to Detour Farm!

Located near Walla Walla, Washington, our farm is devoted to wildlife and habitat conservation, the breeding, care and sale of Rocky Mountain horses and alpacas, gardening, getting dirty, writing, storytelling, friends and good food.

If you sit quietly on the porch, a mule deer buck appears at the river’s edge to nibble on young blades of native grass. A prairie falcon hovers overhead, searching for unwary field mice. A mother coyote and her pups emerge from their den at the edge of the trees and pick their way cautiously through the tall grass.

Wander down to the Walla Walla River to spot steelhead or chinook salmon resting behind submerged boulders before finning their way upstream to spawn. Watch blue heron standing knee-deep at the river’s edge fishing for smolts. At dusk, listen for the distinctive call of the great horned owl and her young as they leave the nest to hunt the grasslands.

Meet Neal’s critters—her Rocky Mountain horses, alpacas, dogs and BC, the barn cat, who thinks she’s a dog. And check out Neal’s baking classes.

Check out Steve’s writing. He writes under the pen name “Sam McLeod”, read his blog, and try his latest recipe.

And be sure to visit our friends. You’ll love them.

We hope you enjoy your visit.

Best,
Neal & Steve Johnson
